I recently shared on my Instagram Stories, our groceries and what we would be making for dinner that week. After going through our meal plan on my Instagram Stories for that particular week, I talked about a new habit my husband, Jeff, and I have picked up on, its benefits and how we were introduced to it. I was shocked by everyone's peaked interest in this certain topic and how much positive response I had from it! So it inspired me to share more with you all. I wanted to talk about my experience with powdered collagen and share a new favorite breakfast recipe of mine as well (AVOCADO OMLET.. see recipe at bottom).
Over Thanksgiving break, we ventured down to North Carolina for a big family get-together. My mom had a jar of Neocell Super Collagen sitting next to her coffee maker. She shared that she had been putting it in her coffee every morning and how it added absolutely no taste to it at all. She also shared that it had done wonders with her skin and nails! "Johnny at Nails and Co. has noticed such a big difference in the thickness of my nails and toes," she said. Really, we thought? Could this be true? "Oh, yes," she said. "And it helps to increase the elasticity in your skin, which we loose as we age." Okay, I thought, I could definitely be into this... At the time, I was going to be entering a new decade in my life shortly, and suddenly my skin had been so much more important to me than it ever had been before! After having two babies, I also knew that now is the time to focus on staying healthy and doing what I can to avoid premature aging. So we all, including myself, willingly added a scoop of collagen to our coffee for all 7 of the mornings we were there and quickly ordered it on Amazon Prime when we got home.
Some weeks later, as I was getting my morning started over a weekend with my little ones, Dr. Oz. was on the TV. The timing was pretty ironic because I never turn our TV on. But since it was over a weekend, Jeff had put it on. So sure enough, there he was talking about collagen on his show! I was so interested to hear what he had to say. After all, I hadn't done any research myself. So I listened in. And you know what he said? He said that collagen is not only great to take for its obvious reasons, which I'll explain some more about below, but the amount of protein in the collagen that I use, has 6.6 grams (13% of your suggested daily value) in it as well!
Low and behold, Dr. Oz's program said that adding collagen to your coffee or tea, is a great way to start your morning because it will help to get your day going with a punch of protein. Collagen is also thought to help improve sleep, joint pain and joint flexibility as well as health, skin and hair. What exactly is collagen you ask? Dr. Axe says, "Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies, especially type 1 collagen." He continues, "It’s found in muscles, bones, skin, blood vessels, digestive system and tendons. It’s what helps give our skin strength and elasticity, along with replacing dead skin cells. When it comes to our joints and tendons, in simplest terms, it’s the “glue” that helps hold the body together." And as I said before, as we age, our bodies produce less collagen. So what is our take on this collagen powder now that we have added to our diets? (I am speaking on behalf of myself, some family members and close friends). I for one have noticed an improvement in my sleep! I'm not a very sound sleeper. I wake easily and sometimes toss and turn. I have definitely noticed an improvement in my sleep, which is huge for me! I don't usually get to bed as early as I'd like to and my mornings start early with my kiddos. So making sure I get a good nights sleep is so important for me. I have to say, I didn't expect this result, but I am not going to stop what I am doing! I have been very much enjoying sleeping more soundly. As for my nails, they are rock hard. My nail tips have grown out and I cannot bend them in the slightest. I think it's a little too soon to notice any difference in my hair or skin, but I'm going to keep adding the collagen to my coffee in the morning.
As for others, I don't want to call anyone out, but I do know someone who has been taking the Neocell Super Collagen powder who was recently diagnosed with minor plaque psoriasis on their knees and elbows. Since taking the Neocell Super Collagen, they have noticed a big improvement in the condition of it, without changing anything else in their diet or lifestyle. Another person I am close with, had a skin diagnoses that caused severe itching. They shared that there has been a noticeable decrease in their itching since taking the collagen powder. Additionally, my mom has been taking the supplement for a long time, and her hairdresser swears her hair is thicker. So what's my take on collagen? I love it and I am going to continue to take it!
PRO TIP: Keep the collagen powder next to your coffee maker so you remember to take it in the morning! I prefer to mix it in with a hot beverage. If you're not a coffee drinker, try OJ or water first thing in the morning. It's known to have a better chance of absorbency on an empty stomach.
Avocado Omelet Recipe:
- 3 eggs
- 1 tablespoon of milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 Avocado halved
- 1 handful of spinach
- 1 handful of shredded mozzarella or cheese of choice
- Diced tomatoes
---Did you know that you can cook with collagen? You can add it into many items to get the same added benefits!
In a small bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt and pepper. Cook eggs in a small skillet sauce pan, using a spatula to allow for uncooked eggs to get to the bottom side around the edge. Rotate around the edge to keep the thickness consistant. Once cooked enough, flip omelet and add cheese, spinach and tomatoes to the cooked side. When the bottom side is cooked through, halve the omelet by flipping one side over and top with avocados. Avocados also taste delicious inside, but add them last without heat. Enjoy!
